STFU (interjection / Internet & Text Slang)
(Also heard as: stfu, Stfu, S.T.F.U.)
Definition:
Shut the fuck up. About as direct as it gets on a keyboard. When looking at the STFU slang meaning, remember that context changes everything—it’s either a harsh shut-down to end an argument, or pure disbelief when somebody drops wild gossip in the group chat.
Where It Comes From:
This goes right back to early 90s bulletin boards, dial-up chat rooms, and multiplayer games like Doom and Quake. When internet arguments got nasty, nobody wasted time spelling out every single curse word with two fingers. Bashing out those four letters got the job done fast, and the habit just carried straight onto modern phones.
How People Actually Use It:
Context does all the heavy lifting here. If a random player in a game lobby types it in all caps, they’re annoyed and want you muted. But if your best mate hits you with “STFU” after you tell them you bumped into your ex, it literally just means “No way, you’re joking!” Just don’t ever slip it into an email to your boss.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“STFU, tell me you did not just say that to his face!”
Translation: I am totally stunned and can’t believe what you did.
-
“Can everyone please just STFU so we can hear footsteps?”
Translation: Be quiet for a second so I can focus.
-
“I just backed my car into a wheelie bin, STFU before you start taking the piss.”
Translation: Don’t laugh at my silly mistake.
