Definition:

Back. Nothing fancy here. You type it into a chat window the second you sit back down at your desk or pick your phone off the counter, letting people know you aren’t ignoring them anymore.

Where It Comes From:

Blame 90s PC gaming and dial-up chatrooms like IRC or MSN. Whenever your mum shouted that dinner was ready or the dog needed out, you threw up an “AFK” (away from keyboard). The moment you sat back down in your computer chair, tapping “BK” let your squad know you were ready to roll again without wasting three seconds typing four whole letters. It just carried over into everyday texting.

How People Actually Use It:

You bump into it in fast group chats on WhatsApp, work Slack threads, Discord servers, or halfway through a live gaming session. People use it to pick up a paused conversation right where it left off. Just remember: if someone asks if you want dinner, they probably mean Burger King, not that they’ve returned from the bathroom.
