IMO (phrase / Internet & Text Slang)
(Also heard as: imo, Imo, I.M.O.)
Definition:
In my opinion. Short, sweet, and straight to the point. You slip it into a sentence when you want to chip in with your personal take without making it sound like an undeniable fact. When looking at the IMO slang meaning, it’s basically a quick disclaimer that says, “This is just how I see it, don’t shoot the messenger.”
Where It Comes From:
This is another classic born in early Usenet groups, bulletin boards, and IRC chat rooms during the late 80s and 90s. When massive internet debates broke out over music, tech, or politics, typing “IMO” was a fast way to state your case without getting dogpiled for sounding arrogant. It saved keystrokes on desktop keyboards and later made texting on old numeric phone keypads a whole lot quicker.
How People Actually Use It:
You see it dropped constantly in group chats, film review threads, and office message boards. People use it to share a hot take about a TV finale, give gentle feedback on a colleague’s draft, or argue over the best takeaway spot in town. If someone wants to come across extra polite, they’ll tweak it to IMHO (in my humble opinion), but the vibe is largely the same.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“The original film was brilliant, but the sequel was rubbish IMO.”
Translation: That’s just my personal view on the movie.
-
“IMO, we should probably leave by five if we want to beat the traffic.”
Translation: Here’s my suggestion for our travel plans.
-
“It’s way too expensive for what you actually get, imo.”
Translation: I don’t think it’s worth the price tag.
