LMAO (interjection / Internet & Text Slang)
(Also heard as: lmao, Lmao, L.M.A.O., LMFAOOO)
Definition:
Laughing my ass (or arse) off. It’s what you send when something genuinely cracks you up—way more than a polite “haha” or a tired little “lol” could ever express. Digging into the LMAO slang meaning, it’s the universal shortcut for: “That is properly funny and I’m cracking up over here.”
Where It Comes From:
This came straight out of early 90s online gaming lobbies, Usenet newsgroups, and dial-up chat rooms. Back on platforms like IRC and ICQ, a plain old “LOL” quickly started to feel a bit hollow and fake. Gamers and early internet regulars wanted something with more bite and dramatic flair, so they tossed in a cheeky curse word to show they were genuinely wheezing behind the screen. When texting blew up on numeric phone keypads, those four letters became an absolute staple.
How People Actually Use It:
You see it plastered all over group chats, TikTok comment rows, Discord voice chats, and casual DMs every single day. People drop it when a friend tells a ridiculously embarrassing story, when an unhinged meme pops up, or even just as a conversational buffer to soften a blunt text so they don’t sound too serious. If something is completely off the rails, you’ll see people stretch it into LMFAO (laughing my fucking ass off) or spam the last letter (“lmaooo”).
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Lmao, tell me you did not just send that voice note to the wrong group!”
Translation: That is hilarious and I’m losing my mind laughing at you.
-
“Watched him trip over thin air and try to act cool, lmao every single time.”
Translation: That clumsy moment will never fail to make me laugh.
-
“I thought the meeting was on Zoom and sat there waiting for twenty minutes, lmao.”
Translation: Admitting a silly blunder and laughing at myself.
