NOYB (phrase / Internet & Text Slang)
(Also heard as: noyb, Noyb, N.O.Y.B.)
Definition:
None of your business. That’s the long and short of it. It’s how you shut down a cheeky question without having to swear your head off. If someone has just hit you with the NOYB slang meaning, consider yourself told: they reckon you’re poking your nose where it isn’t wanted, and they aren’t going to spill the beans.
Where It Comes From:
This is a proper throwback to 90s dial-up web chats, MSN banter, and battered old Nokia phones. Back in the day, family computers had swear filters that would kick you off the server the second you typed anything rude, and texting was a nightmare where tapping out full words gave your thumbs a serious workout. Knocking it down to four quick letters let people tell nosy strangers to do one without getting banned by the chat moderator.
How People Actually Use It:
You see it tossed around whenever someone gets way too nosy in the group chat, around the dinner table, or in TikTok comments. It’s what you send when an overbearing relative asks what you earn, when a mate asks why you quietly snuck home early from the pub, or when a stranger starts prying into your private life. It puts the shutters down instantly, but with just enough cheek that it doesn’t cause a massive row.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Who were you out with until sunrise? NOYB mate.”
Translation: Stop badgering me about what I got up to last night.
-
“NOYB what I paid for the trainers, they look class and that’s that.”
Translation: Stop worrying about my bank balance.
-
“Some busybody asked why I left the party early—slapped back with a quick noyb.”
Translation: Told someone to keep their nose out of my plans.
