Chicks (noun / casual slang)
(Also heard as: Chick, Fit chick, His chick, The chicks)
Definition:
-
Everyday casual slang for girls, women, or a group of mates who are girls.
-
A bloke’s girlfriend or the girl he’s seeing.
Where It Comes From: Started out way back in the jazz era of the 1920s from the pet name “chicken.” American movies, rock bands, and 90s sitcoms like Friends blew it up worldwide. It feels a bit retro now compared to newer slang, but people still toss it around without giving it a second thought.
How People Actually Use It: Used when asking who’s turning up to a party, talking about weekend plans, or asking a mate about the new girl he’s dating. You’ll hear it down the pub when lads are chatting about their weekend, or when a group of girls playfully call themselves “the chicks” on a night out.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Is Dave bringing his new chick to the pub tonight?”
Translation: Is he bringing the girl he’s seeing along with him?
-
“There were a few chicks from uni at the gig yesterday.”
Translation: A couple of girls from our course were at the show.
-
“Off out for food with the chicks from the office later.”
Translation: Having dinner with the women from my team after work.
