Chopped (adjective / modern slang / internet insult)
(Also heard as: Proper chopped, Chopped chin, Chopped up)
Definition:
-
Unattractive, ugly, or looking rough.
-
Cluttered, messy, or completely ruined (often referring to a bad haircut, poor outfit, or awkward facial features).
Pronunciation: /tʃɒpt/
Where It Comes From: Originally picked up from classic hip-hop and DJ culture (like “chopped and screwed” remixes, where tracks were sliced up and slowed down) and barber lingo for getting a fresh hair trim (“getting chopped”).
Around 2022–2023, American and UK TikTok subcultures, streaming chats, and the “looksmaxxing” crowd completely hijacked the term. Instead of meaning a decent haircut, people started using “chopped” to describe someone whose face or haircut looked like it had been hacked at with an axe. From there, it rapidly bled into British school hallways and group chats as a savage way to rate someone’s looks.
How People Actually Use It: It’s a blunt, ruthless insult for when someone is looking rough or unkept.
You mostly hear it when someone gets an absolute disaster of a skin fade from a dodgy barber, steps out in an awful outfit, or posts a bad selfie with terrible lighting. If a mate turns up looking like they’ve had two hours of sleep with their hair sticking up everywhere, you tell them they’re looking “proper chopped.” It’s also thrown around casually in dating banter when someone asks for an honest rating on a crush and the answer is a hard no.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“The barber pushed my hairline back by two inches, I look proper chopped.”
Translation: “My hairdresser ruined my haircut, and I look terrible.”
-
“He tried to set me up with his mate, but the lad was totally chopped.”
Translation: “He tried to introduce me to his friend, but he was very unattractive.”
-
“Woke up with dark bags under my eyes looking absolutely chopped.”
Translation: “I woke up looking exhausted and dishevelled.”
