Egghead (noun / UK slang & banter)
(Also heard as: Proper egghead, Bit of an egghead, Total egghead)
Definition: A boffin, know-it-all, or brainbox. Someone packed with book smarts who loves theory, but might struggle to wire a plug or show a bit of common sense.
Pronunciation: /ˈɛɡ.hɛd/
Where It Comes From: Folk started chucking it about in the early 1900s to poke fun at academics whose high foreheads and bald patches literally looked like eggs. It caught on properly in the 1950s after reporters slapped the tag on nerdy US politicians who talked down to ordinary voters. Across the pond in Britain, it slid straight into workplace banter and school playgrounds as a quick dig at the swots in the front row.
How People Actually Use It: Usually rolled out at the pub when a mate pulls an obscure piece of trivia out of their back pocket. It’s what you call the lad who gets top marks on every exam without revising, or the mate who can explain astrophysics over a pint but loses their car keys twice a day.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Get Dave on the quiz team tonight, the man’s an absolute egghead.”
Translation: Make sure Dave plays because he knows all the useless trivia.
-
“Don’t get him started on politics, he’ll give you a full egghead lecture.”
Translation: Avoid that topic unless you want a boring, overcomplicated speech.
-
“He’s a proper egghead in the lab, but useless in the kitchen.”
Translation: He is brilliant at science but has zero practical life skills.
