Era (noun / US & UK Pop Culture Slang)
(Also heard as: In my ___ era, Villain era, Flop era, Eras)
Definition:
A current phase of your life that is defined by a particular mood, hobby, look or obsession, as if you were a pop star releasing a new album. It can be serious, silly or just an excuse for a bad decision.
Where It Comes From:
Music fans have described the different stages of an artist’s career as eras for years, but the slang took off through Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which began in 2023. Fans, then everyone on TikTok, started announcing their own eras, and the phrase “in my ___ era” became a fill-in-the-blank joke across the US and UK.
How People Actually Use It:
Used to announce a temporary phase or a change in attitude, usually with a bit of humour. People say they are in their gym era, their villain era or their “not replying to texts” era. It is also handy for excusing something odd about your behaviour at the moment.
Examples in the Wild:
- “I’m in my early nights and green juice era.”
Meaning: I have decided to live a calmer, healthier life for now.
- “He’s in his DIY era, the whole flat smells of paint.”
Meaning: He has become obsessed with home improvement projects at the moment.
- “She’s officially in her villain era.”
Meaning: She has stopped trying to please everyone and is putting herself first.
