GTA (noun / UK & Street Slang)

(Also heard as: Doing a GTA, Grand theft, TWOC / TWOCing)

Definition: Nicked or stolen cars, joyriding, or carjacking. Lifted straight from the title of the video game Grand Theft Auto, people use it as shorthand for stealing a vehicle, driving like a maniac, or causing chaos on the roads.

Where It Comes From: Originally an American legal charge (Grand Theft Auto), but popularized worldwide by the Rockstar video game series. In the UK, it quickly slipped into everyday street slang, rap lyrics, and drill tracks as a flashier alternative to the older British police term “TWOC” (taking without owner’s consent).

How People Actually Use It: Heard when talking about joyriding, dodgy motors, or watching someone drive down an estate at 60 mph like they’re trying to dodge the police in a game. It gets used both seriously when a car gets whipped, and jokingly when someone drives like an absolute lunatic.

Examples in the Wild:

• “Look at him flying down the road, think he’s playing GTA or something.”

  Meaning: He is driving dangerously fast and aggressively.

• “Someone did a GTA on his motor outside the flats last night.”

  Meaning: Somebody stole his car overnight.

• “Don’t leave your keys on the hall table, that’s an easy GTA.”

  Meaning: Put your keys away or someone will break in and take your car.
