Kak (noun / adjective / slang)
(Also spelt: Cack)
Definition:
-
Rubbish, low-quality nonsense, or poor performance.
-
Literal faeces or excrement.
Pronunciation: /kæk/ (rhymes with back and tack)
Where It Comes From: One of the oldest crude words in the book, tracing straight back to the Proto-Indo-European root *kakka- (to defecate).
It exists in Latin (cacare), Dutch, German, and Old Irish. In the UK, the variant spelling cack has been used for centuries (giving us phrases like cack-handed). Meanwhile, kak is a massive staple of South African English and Afrikaans. Thanks to global travel, South African expats, and British vernacular blending, both versions are widely used across the UK as a slightly softer alternative to heavier swear words.
How People Actually Use It: Used when you want to call something rubbish without dropping a full-on F-bomb or S-word in mixed company.
If a football team puts in an embarrassing display on a rainy Tuesday night, fans will groan that they played “absolute kak.” If someone buys cheap tools that snap after two minutes, they’ll bin them and complain about buying “pure kak.” It’s blunt, dirty, but sits just on the right side of casual pub chat.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Don’t bother ordering the takeaway from down the road, the food is complete kak.”
Translation: “Avoid that restaurant; their food is terrible quality.”
-
“I talked so much kak in that job interview, I’ve got no chance of getting it.”
Translation: “I babbled complete nonsense during my interview and performed poorly.”
-
“He panicked and made a right kak of the penalty shootout.”
Translation: “He lost his nerve and completely messed up his attempt.”
