Lit (adjective / modern slang)
(Also heard as: Proper lit, Too lit, It’s getting lit, Lit AF)
Definition:
-
Packed with energy, exciting, wild, or buzzing with a great vibe (parties, gigs, nights out).
-
Smashed, drunk, or high off booze or weed (the older meaning).
Pronunciation: /lɪt/
Where It Comes From: Way back in the early 1900s, people said someone was “lit” or “lit up” if they’d had too many pints and their face went red. Fast forward to 2010s US hip-hop and trap music, and rappers like Travis Scott and Migos completely flipped the script. It stopped being just about drinking and turned into the number one word for when a party, crowd, or whole room was going absolutely off the rails with good energy.
How People Actually Use It: Tossed into conversation whenever an event is lively, chaotic, or brilliant fun. You’ll hear it when planning a weekend away, walking into a packed club when a banger drops, or looking back at the madness from a night out the morning after.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“That warehouse rave was proper lit from start to finish.”
Translation: The music event had an incredible atmosphere all night.
-
“Put that tune on again, the whole room’s gonna get lit.”
Translation: Play that popular track because everyone will start dancing and having fun.
-
“Careful on those tequila shots, mate, you’re already looking pretty lit.”
Translation: Slow down on the drinks because you are noticeably tipsy.
