Lurker (noun / internet talk)
(Also heard as: Proper lurker, Lurking, Silent lurker)
Definition: Someone who sits in group chats, forums, or social media reading every single message and watching all the videos, but never types a word or hits like. Purely there to watch the drama unfold in peace.
Pronunciation: /ˈlɜː.kər/
Where It Comes From: Comes from the plain English word for hanging around in the dark unnoticed. Old-school tech nerds in the 80s and 90s on early bulletin boards and chatrooms started calling people lurkers because they’d suck up all the bandwidth reading posts without ever chiming in to say hello. It stuck around and carried straight over into WhatsApp, Reddit, and TikTok.
How People Actually Use It: Used on that one mate in the group chat who hasn’t sent a message since last summer, but brings up your weekend plans down the pub because they read every single text. It’s also what you call yourself when you just want to scroll an app in bed, watch the mess, and not get dragged into an argument with strangers.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“You never reply in the chat, but you knew all about the party—proper lurker, mate.”
Translation: You stay silent in the group but read everything we say.
-
“I deleted my Twitter account and just made a burner to be a lurker.”
Translation: I don’t post anymore, I just read what other people write.
-
“There’s about thirty people in this meeting and twenty of them are just lurkers.”
Translation: Most folk on this call are just listening with their cameras and mics off.
