Minger (noun / British slang)
(Also heard as: Right minger, Total minger, Proper minging, Humdinger of a minger)
Definition:
Someone or something that is visually unappealing, foul-smelling, or generally repulsive. It’s an unflattering insult tossed out for an unattractive person, a knackered old car, or a rough-looking pint of beer.
Pronunciation: Min-Ger
Where It Comes From:
Rooted in the Scottish word ming (meaning a foul stench or rot) and the adjective minging (smelly or disgusting). During the 1990s and early 2000s, British school playgrounds, tabloids, lad mags, and shows like Big Brother took the word and turned it into the ultimate playground taunt across the whole of the UK.
How People Actually Use It:
Heard on building sites, across pub smoking areas, and in teenage banter. You’ll hear it when mates are taking the mick out of an old pair of mud-caked trainers, slagging off a dodgy haircut from a budget barbershop, or describing a bloke’s rusted-out banger that barely passed its MOT.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Look at that pair of trainers he’s wearing to the pub—absolute mingers.”
Translation: His shoes look terrible and dirty.
-
“I tried cooking that curry myself and it turned out a right minger.”
Translation: The meal ended up looking and tasting awful.
-
“He bought an old banger for two hundred quid and it’s a total minger to drive.”
Translation: He bought a cheap, beat-up car that is in terrible shape.
