Neek (noun / UK slang)
Definition: A cross between a nerd and a geek. Basically a swot who has zero street sense, lives for revision, and gets mugged off for being a massive try-hard.
Pronunciation: /niːk/ (rhymes with geek and leak)
Where It Comes From: A lazy mashup of “nerd” and “geek” cooked up on London school buses and estates back in the early noughties. Early grime acts and pirate radio MCs chucked it into bars, but the absolute peak of its fame came from schoolyards and shows like The Inbetweeners. It stuck around because it’s short, brutal, and punches right where it hurts.
How People Actually Use It: You use it whenever someone is acting painfully square or taking school, uni, or life way too seriously.
If a lad turns up to a session with his revision flashcards or puts his hand up to remind the teacher about homework, he’s getting called a neek straight away. It’s also quality ammo on social media when some middle-class lad tries acting like a roadman online, but everyone knows he spends his evenings playing Warhammer.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Look at him sitting on the front row asking for extra reading, absolute neek.”
Translation: “He’s being a massive swot in class.”
-
“Why are you wearing a high-vis backpack on a normal walk? Proper neek energy.”
Translation: “You’re taking being sensible way too far.”
-
“He talks big on Twitter, but everyone knows he’s a proper neek.”
Translation: “He acts tough online, but he’s actually harmless.”
