Nitty (noun / UK street slang)
Definition: A hardcore drug addict or crackhead. Also tossed at mates as an insult when they’re acting scruffy, tight with money, or begging for scraps.
Pronunciation: /ˈnɪt.i/ (nit-ee)
Where It Comes From: Came out of London estate culture in the late 90s and 2000s, riffing on “nits” (head lice) to mock the scruffy, scratching state of someone addicted to crack or heroin. Drill and grime artists cemented it in their lyrics, and it quickly spread from inner-city stairwells into schoolyards and group chats up and down Britain.
How People Actually Use It: Literally, it’s the bloke outside the off-licence asking for 20p so he can score.
Casually, it’s how you take the piss out of your mates. If someone rolls up in grey joggers covered in paint, finishes off random pints left on a pub table, or bugs you ten times for a drag of your vape, you tell them to stop acting like a nitty.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Had to dodge about four nittys just trying to get cash out at the machine.”
Translation: “Several local drug users were loitering around the ATM asking for money.”
-
“Why are you scraping the burnt bits off the tray? Proper nitty moves that.”
Translation: “You’re being embarrassingly desperate over rubbish leftover food.”
-
“Don’t leave your bike unlocked outside the shop, a nitty will have it in two seconds.”
Translation: “An opportunistic thief will steal your unattended bike immediately.”
