Plonker (noun / UK slang)
(Also heard as: Right plonker, Bit of a plonker, Total plonker)
Definition: Someone acting daft or doing something stupid. It’s not a vicious swear word, just a way of taking the mickey out of a mate who’s messed up.
Pronunciation: Plon-Ker
Where It Comes From: It was around in old army and regional talk, but Only Fools and Horses made it stick. Every week, Del Boy was shouting “you plonker, Rodney” across Peckham, and folk across the country started saying it at home, at work, and down the boozer.
How People Actually Use It: You call someone a plonker when they do something clumsy or boneheaded. Think leaving the house in odd shoes, spilling a full cuppa on the rug, or backing into a bollard in the supermarket car park.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Walked clean into a glass door—felt like a total plonker.”
Translation: I did something embarrassing in public.
-
“He bought a petrol mower for an artificial lawn, absolute plonker.”
Translation: He wasted money on something completely pointless.
-
“Give over, you plonker, you’re looking at last year’s train times.”
Translation: Stop being silly, you have the wrong information.
