Salty (adjective / UK slang)
(Also heard as: Being salty, Getting salty, Proper salty)
Definition: Sullen, bitter, or annoyed over something totally petty.
Pronunciation: /ˈsɒl.ti/
Where It Comes From: Started out with old sailors describing cranky crewmates, then blew up through US hip-hop and competitive gaming lobbies. Once UK teenagers and uni students started screaming it during heated FIFA sessions, it quickly bled into everyday banter.
How People Actually Use It: It’s what you call a sore loser. You throw it at a mate who’s throwing a quiet tantrum after getting beaten at board games, getting ignored in the group chat, or being forced to buy the round. Basically, when someone is visibly stewing but trying to pretend they’re fine.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Mate, you’re only salty ’cause I beat you three nil.”
Translation: “You’re only sulking because you lost the match.”
-
“She went proper salty after we ordered the food without her.”
Translation: “She got really annoyed and bitter because we didn’t wait.”
-
“Don’t get salty with me just because you left your wallet at home.”
Translation: “Don’t take your bad mood out on me.”
