Sus (adjective / modern slang)
(Also heard as: A bit sus, Acting sus, Looking bare sus)
Definition: Shady, dodgy, or outright untrustworthy. It’s just a fast way to say something feels suspect.
Pronunciation: /sʌs/
Where It Comes From: British coppers used it decades ago for the old “sus laws” back in the 70s and 80s, where they could stop anyone simply on suspicion. Fast forward to 2020: the online spaceship game Among Us blew up during lockdown. Players spent hours arguing over who was faking tasks, the slang jumped straight off Discord, and suddenly every teenager in Britain was calling everything under the sun “sus.”
How People Actually Use It: Toss it out the second your gut tells you something isn’t right. If a mate comes up with a weird excuse for why they can’t make five-a-side, someone tries selling brand-new trainers out of a boot for twenty quid, or a strange account drops a link in your DMs, it’s sus.
