Swag (noun / slang)
(Also heard as: Got swag, Swagged out, Swag bag)
Definition:
-
Confidence, personal style, and the way you hold yourself.
-
Free freebies and promo gear you nick from festivals or work events.
-
Stolen loot (the original thieves’ cant meaning).
Pronunciation: /swæɡ/
Where It Comes From: Way back in the 1700s, British thieves used it for stolen bundles of cash and jewels. Jump forward to the late 2000s: US rap took “swagger,” chopped it down, and suddenly Soulja Boy and Lil B had the entire planet shouting it. It took over UK playgrounds, defining the era of snapbacks and graphic tees, before corporate marketing suits ruined it by using it for free pens and tote bags.
How People Actually Use It: In the 2010s people said it dead seriously, but these days it’s mostly a tongue-in-cheek compliment when a mate turns up looking sharp or moving with unbothered confidence. The other place you’ll hear it without fail is trade shows or gigs, where folks will happily elbow through a crowd just to grab a bag of free branded junk.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Walked in with the vintage leather jacket like he owned the place—mate had pure swag.”
Translation: He looked effortless and confident in what he was wearing.
-
“We only popped into the event for twenty minutes to raid the swag bags.”
Translation: We showed up exclusively for the free merch.
-
“Threw on some cheap sunglasses and now he reckons he’s fully swagged out.”
Translation: He thinks one little accessory makes him the coolest person in the room.
