Unalive (verb / adjective / internet slang)
(Also heard as: Unalived, Unaliving, Unaliving oneself, Self-unalive)
Definition:
-
Internet code for to die, kill, or take one’s own life.
-
A stand-in word used by creators and commenters to bypass automated social media censors and avoid getting banned or demonetised.
Where It Comes From: Back in 2013, the Marvel animated series Ultimate Spider-Man had Deadpool make a silly quip about “unaliving” someone to keep the cartoon family-friendly. Around 2020, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram began cracking down on videos mentioning death, murder, or suicide. To stop the algorithm burying their content, true-crime YouTubers and everyday posters started using “unalive” as an algorithmic dodge, and it quickly bled into spoken real-life chat.
How People Actually Use It: Heard constantly in true-crime podcasts, TikTok storytelling clips, and gaming streams where using real words like “murder” or “suicide” gets a video flagged. Kids and teens have also picked it up as a dark, semi-ironic joke when they’re being dramatic about a bad exam, a terrible hangover, or an exhausting week at work.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“The documentary got muted because the presenter forgot to say unalive instead of murder.”
Translation: The video was flagged by the platform’s automated safety filters.
-
“If I have to work another weekend shift I’m going to unalive myself.”
Translation: I am being completely dramatic about how much I hate working overtime.
-
“The boss character in this game is impossible to unalive without the special weapon.”
Translation: You cannot defeat or destroy the enemy using regular attacks.
