Wallad (noun / UK slang / MLE)
(Also heard as: Proper wallad, Total wallad, Acting like a wallad)
Definition:
A fool, idiot, or clown. Someone who does something remarkably stupid or embarrassing.
Pronunciation: /ˈwɒl.æd/
Where It Comes From:
Lifted from the Arabic word walad (meaning a boy or child). As Arabic, Somali, and Caribbean communities mingled across London, the word shifted into Multicultural London English (MLE)—taking the original meaning of an immature kid and turning it into a straight insult for someone acting like a complete doughnut. It also got a boost from its similarity to the classic British insult wally.
How People Actually Use It:
You call someone a wallad when they make a clumsy mistake, say something brainless, or act out just to show off in front of a crowd. It’s mostly used in friendly banter to roast a mate for doing something silly, though it can carry a bit more bite if someone is genuinely getting on your nerves.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Why did you jump the barrier in front of the guard, you absolute wallad?”
Translation: Why did you do something so obviously stupid right in front of security?
-
“He dropped his whole takeaway on the pavement like a wallad.”
Translation: He clumsily dropped his food all over the ground.
-
“Don’t listen to him, he’s talking like a proper wallad.”
Translation: Ignore him, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
