Washed (adjective / modern slang)
(Also heard as: Washed up, Proper washed)
Definition: Finished, past it, or lost the plot. Said when someone—usually an athlete, a musician, or a mate—can’t perform like they used to.
Pronunciation: /wɒʃt/
Where It Comes From: It’s just the lazy abbreviation of “washed up.”
American basketball forums and late-night Call of Duty lobbies started trimming it down around 2015 to take the mickey out of veteran players whose reflexes were gone. British football fans on Twitter and TikTok jumped on it immediately. Within a season or two, it replaced “past his sell-by date” in schoolyards and pub arguments up and down the UK.
How People Actually Use It: Every Saturday afternoon across group chats and social media.
If a striker on £200k a week shanks a shot into the stands, the whole group chat calls him washed before the ball even lands. But it’s not just for sports. If a mate who used to down pints until 3 AM now complains about a sore back and leaves the pub at 9 PM, you call him washed. It’s the ultimate short-hand for someone whose best days are well behind them.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Look at him tripping over his own boots, he’s totally washed.”
Translation: “He’s completely lost his ability and can’t play well anymore.”
-
“I tried running a 5k on Sunday morning and my knees gave up—I’m proper washed, mate.”
Translation: “I attempted a run and realised my fitness has gone downhill.”
-
“That show got washed after season three when the main writer left.”
Translation: “The series plummeted in quality after its third season.”
