Wavy (adjective / modern slang)
(Also heard as: Proper wavy, Looking wavy, Wavy garms, Bit wavy)
Definition:
-
Looking ridiculously stylish or wearing clothes that stand out in a good way.
-
A really smooth, chilled-out vibe at a party or in a tune.
-
Feeling a bit tipsy or light on your feet after a couple of quick pints.
Where It Comes From: A New York rapper named Max B started throwing the word around in the mid-2000s to describe someone moving with effortless cool, like gliding on water. UK festival-goers and streetwear heads grabbed hold of it a few years later. Before long, vintage clothes shops and rave crowds made “wavy garms” the go-to phrase for loud retro jackets, colourful shirts, and sharp clobber.
How People Actually Use It: Tossed out as a compliment the second a mate rocks up to the pub in a top-tier jacket, or when a DJ drops a ridiculously smooth tune that gets the whole room swaying. It’s also what you admit to your mates when you’ve had two pints in the sun on an empty stomach and the buzz hits you early.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Where did you get that retro fleece from? Proper wavy.”
Translation: That jacket looks quality on you.
-
“The tunes they’re playing out in the beer garden are so wavy.”
Translation: The music is really relaxed and fits the mood perfectly.
-
“Had two quick ciders and I’m already feeling a bit wavy, not gonna lie.”
Translation: The booze has gone straight to my head.
