Adjective / British & American Slang
Woke was originally used to describe awareness of social injustice, particularly around race, inequality, and discrimination. In recent years, it’s also taken on a more ironic or critical tone, sometimes used to mock people seen as overly politically correct or self-righteous.
Example: “She’s really woke when it comes to climate issues.”
Means: “She’s very aware and informed about environmental matters.”
Example: “He called the film too woke.”
Means: “He thought the film was pushing a politically correct agenda.”
