TBH (adverb & interjection / Internet & Text Slang)
(Also heard as: tbh, Tbh, T.B.H.)
Definition:
To be honest. That’s really it. You chuck it at the start or end of a message when you’re about to speak your mind, admit to something a bit daft, or tell someone what you actually think without dancing around it. When digging into the TBH slang meaning, it’s basically just code for, “Look, I’m just telling it like it is.”
Where It Comes From:
Blame early mobile phones. Back when we all had to tap a keypad three times just to get a single letter, writing out full words on a Nokia was a nightmare. Shortening three words into “TBH” saved thumb cramp and kept you inside that tiny text limit on MSN Messenger and SMS. Years later, it randomly blew up again on Facebook and Instagram when kids spent entire summers posting “like my status for a TBH” to fish for compliments.
How People Actually Use It:
You see it fly across group chats, office DMs, and social media replies all day long. People throw it in to soften a harsh critique (“tbh that haircut isn’t it, mate”), make an excuse to ditch plans (“TBH my bed is way too comfy right now”), or drop an unpopular opinion about whatever show everyone else is raving about.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“TBH, I’m already in my trackies and I’m not leaving the house.”
Translation: I am 100% staying on the couch.
-
“Everyone hypes up that new burger spot, but TBH the chips were stone cold.”
Translation: It really isn’t worth the hype or money.
-
“I totally forgot we had that call scheduled for nine, tbh.”
Translation: I messed up and missed it completely.
