Brainrot (noun / internet & UK slang)
Definition: The state of your mind after rotting your attention span on bottom-tier internet rubbish. Also describes the nonsensical gibberish kids and teenagers blurt out after spending eight hours glued to TikTok.
Pronunciation: /ˈbreɪn.rɒt/ (brain-rot)
Where It Comes From: People have moaned about trash telly “rotting your brain” since the seventies, but the modern compound word exploded online around 2023–2024. Algorithms started feeding kids hyper-stimulating, surreal micro-content like Skibidi Toilet, lookmaxxing, and random buzzword mashups. It moved from Reddit and TikTok comment sections straight onto school playgrounds across the UK.
How People Actually Use It: Two main ways: to admit you’ve melted your own skull with screen time, or to describe actual nonsensical slang.
If you lose four hours lying on the sofa doomscrolling short clips until your eyes sting, that’s brainrot. If your younger sibling won’t stop shouting about “rizz”, “gyatt”, and “fanum tax” at the dinner table instead of speaking proper English, they’re suffering from terminal brainrot.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“I’ve been on TikTok since two in the afternoon, my brain is pure mush from this brainrot.”
Translation: “I have wasted hours consuming absolute rubbish on my phone.”
-
“Listen to the kids on the back of the bus talking pure brainrot—none of those words are in the dictionary.”
Translation: “Young people are speaking entirely in surreal internet buzzwords.”
-
“Close the app and go touch some grass, mate, the brainrot is getting to you.”
Translation: “Put your phone down and go outside to get some fresh air.”
