Where It Comes From: Short for AMOG (Alpha Male of the Group), an old 2000s pickup artist and bodybuilding forum acronym. Internet subcultures on 4chan, Looksmaxxing boards, and gym communities shortened it to a verb. By the early 2020s, TikTok exploded with “mewing” and jawline memes, dragging the word right onto UK high streets, uni campuses, and gym changing rooms.

How People Actually Use It: Slapped down whenever someone looks laughably outmatched standing in a group photo or walking into a room.

If you’re 5’9 and stand next to a mate who’s 6’4 with a chiselled jaw and broad shoulders, you just got brutalised and mogged. It’s used in self-deprecating banter among lads down the gym or in group chats when analyzing festival photos where one bloke clearly stole all the attention.
