Sweaty (adjective / gaming & internet slang)
(Also heard as: Sweat, Sweatfest, Sweatlord)
Definition:
-
Trying way too hard and sucking the fun out of something that’s meant to be casual.
-
A match or lobby full of relentless try-hards.
Pronunciation: /ˈswɛt.i/
Where It Comes From: Call of Duty and Fortnite lobbies. It’s the visual of someone hunched two inches from their monitor, gripping the pad with clammy hands and treating a casual Friday night match like an esports final.
How People Actually Use It: To call out anyone who takes things way too seriously. You’ll hear it when someone ruins a chill gaming session with meta tactics, but also at a friendly five-a-side kickabout or in the office when a colleague goes into overdrive to impress the boss.
Examples in the Wild:
-
“Don’t be so sweaty, it’s just a game.”
Translation: “Calm down and stop trying so hard; we’re just playing for fun.”
-
“That player is really sweaty in every match.”
Translation: “That person plays like their life depends on it every single round.”
-
“Five-a-side was a proper sweatfest tonight—blokes two-footing each other for no reason.”
Translation: “The casual football match got ridiculously aggressive and competitive.”
