Crunk (adjective / noun / US Hip-Hop Slang)
(Also heard as: Get crunk, Crunked up, Crunk music)
Definition:
Wildly energetic, rowdy and hyped up. It also describes a style of loud, bass-heavy hip-hop built for getting a club or a car park going.
Where It Comes From:
It grew out of Southern US hip-hop, especially in Memphis and Atlanta, in the 1990s. The word is usually explained as a mash-up of “crazy” and “drunk”. Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz took the sound and the word into the mainstream in the early 2000s, and it travelled to UK clubs on the back of the music.
How People Actually Use It:
Used for a party or crowd that is properly going off. To “get crunk” means to go wild, shout a lot and lose your voice. Today it is mostly heard with a hint of 2000s nostalgia, or as a joke when someone gets overexcited at a family do.
Examples in the Wild:
- “The whole place went crunk when the DJ dropped that tune.”
Meaning: The crowd went wild with excitement.
- “We’re getting crunk before the match tonight.”
Meaning: We are going to hype ourselves up and get loud.
- “Dad got crunk at the wedding and did the worm.”
Meaning: Dad got carried away and went wildly over the top on the dance floor.
